Harvest Monday 11/29-12/5 2011

Medium sized artichoke
We are still waiting patiently on our root veggies, garlic, onions, peas (I don't really expect to get much, maybe just seeds for spring), and brassicas. We were very surprised by the little artichoke and there is another even smaller one that we are trying to let grow a little more. We ate lots of salads this week along with eggs. I had an extra dozen eggs and posted to try and get rid of them. We now have a friend who wants to buy 2 dozen eggs a month! I'm excited about this because we really want to provide for more than just our family...this is the first step in the right direction.
We are linking up with daphnes dandelions for harvest monday!

oh wow, artichokes in Dec? How amazing is that? Mine are currently buried under some snow. We shall see if they survive to make 'chokes next spring.

That's one good looking artichoke.

I am trying to keep my artichokes safely mulched and insulated to overwinter at this point - getting some actual buds would be amazing in December!

Artichokes, how wonderful! I want to put it on our list for next year but the gardener half of my family is reluctant... are they difficult to grow?

I was shocked with the artichoke too! We purchased a little artichoke plant from our local farmers market this spring and planted it. It has been very very easy to grow. Then when the weather started to get cold we chopped it down to about and inch (we read that this is what you do with them during winter. Our weather has been really mild for this time of year and it grew back rather fast then started to bloom again. Crazy! I think they are really easy to grow and so beautiful that this coming spring we plan on planting a lot, even in the front yard. If you let them finish blooming instead of eating the flower is amazingly beautiful and bees love them!
