the spider at night...this could be scary but its not!

So now we all know...if you want to take a picture of a web, take it at night! As you can see, she is spending the time to consume her web (she is big, which should indicate she is female) and rebuild it. This may not be the most amazing thing you have even seen but to me it is remarkable. Remember, she did only use her own body to construct it. Since my last name begins with a "D" and I am weird about initials, we have decided none of our children will have "V" names (the initials would be VD, not cool in my mind). Since this is the case...she will have a dreamy "V" name (my two favorite)...Viola Valentina the American house spider (after a little Internet time...I believe this is what she is or any orb weaver...which is kind of an awesome thing to be). Now I just hope she is okay with the fact that I took pictures late at night of her and her lovely web. Viola Valentina..."Please stay here!"

This little big guy girl has been living on the back porch for a couple weeks now. At first all I noticed was the 2-3 foot wide web of beauty, but then I other I finally saw the spider creating these masterpieces. I have tried to take pictures of the webs but I can't seem to get it on camera.

Does anyone know what kind it is? Its abdomen is about the size of a dime and the legs are about 2.5 inches. The pictures make it look reddish brown but when I look at it its black and white striped legs with a grey abdomen.

We all really love spending time in the garden and with our girls but I think the little guy loves it most. He is a real outdoor kid...just loves being outside. I always have him wear a hat to keep him protected from the sun and he always wears boots because it is usually very muddy, he just loves wearing them.

As I have said before he is pretty hard to get a good picture of...luckily this time he was enjoying it and wanted me to keep taking his picture. He had to grab a rock and pose with it of course.
